What happened

Ford is recalling 565,691 Bronco and Bronco Raptor vehicles (model years 2021-2026) after federal regulators identified a wiring harness defect that can cause short circuits and engine fires. The problem stems from insufficient abrasion protection on wiring in the engine compartment, leading to exposed wires that can generate enough heat or spark energy to ignite a fire.

15 engine fires have been reported between October 2024 and June 2026 (seven in Bronco Raptors, eight in base models), with no injuries. Ford estimates 1% of recalled vehicles have the actual defect. Owners may notice smoke through air vents or dashboard warnings before flames appear from the passenger side of the engine compartment.

Dealerships will install protective sheathing over the wiring harness at no charge. Owner notification letters begin August 24, 2026.

What to watch

  • August 24, 2026: Ford begins mailing recall notices to owners

  • Dealer service capacity and completion rate as 565,000+ vehicles require physical repairs

  • Any additional fire reports that emerge before owners complete the fix
