What happened
Ford is recalling 741,195 vehicles in the U.S. over a 10R80 transmission defect that can damage the parking system, allowing vehicles to roll away after being parked. The recall affects 2021 F-150s, 2020-2021 Explorers and Lincoln Aviators, and 2018-2021 Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators - all equipped with park-by-wire functionality.
The fault occurs when certain transmission downshifts briefly engage the parking pawl while the vehicle is still moving due to insufficient fluid flow. This can damage the transmission's parking system, preventing it from securely holding the vehicle in Park if the electronic parking brake isn't applied. Ford estimates 1% of affected vehicles have the defect.
Ford is aware of 24 allegations of property damage and 9 alleged injuries related to the issue. Dealers will update powertrain control module software to prevent problematic shifts and replace any damaged transmission components free of charge.
Separately, Ford is recalling 36,046 Bronco Raptors (2022-2026) for improperly secured fender flares that can detach while driving.
What to watch
Monitor warranty expense guidance in upcoming quarterly results - large-scale recalls typically flow through service costs. Track whether the transmission issue spreads to other model years using the same 10R80 unit. Ford's quality reputation, recently highlighted by JD Power rankings, now faces near-term scrutiny from this rollaway risk.
Also Worth Watching
Ford's recall exposes shared transmission architecture risks across domestic OEMs. GM uses similar park-by-wire systems in high-volume SUV and truck platforms - any read-through on 10-speed unit durability could pressure GM's warranty reserves and quality positioning against Tesla and import competitors.
